The Sounding Board is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that presents folk music concerts at the Sounding Board Coffeehouse on most Saturdays from September through May, in addition to publishing this monthly newsletter. You may become a member of the Sounding Board to receive the printed version of this newsletter in the mail each month and to receive a discount on admissions to our concerts as indicated in the Sounding Board Coffeehouse listings below.
Folk music concerts held at The Universalist Church of West Hartford, 433 Fern Street, West Hartford, CT, or at The First Church of Christ Congregational, 12 South Main Street, West Hartford, CT, as indicated below. Wheelchair accessible. Concerts start at 8:00 P.M. Doors open at 7:00 P.M., and reservations are held until 7:45 P.M. Admission prices are noted below for each concert. Unless otherwise noted, admission for children 12 and under is $8.00. For reservations or more information, contact Brent Hall at reservations@folknotes.org or 203-272-8404. (For reservations we do not need payment in advance. We add your name to the reservations list, and you pay admission at the door on the night of the concert.)
Directions to the Universalist Church: From I-84, take the "Park Road, West Hartford Center" exit. Turn right at the end of the long exit ramp, then turn left immediately at the light onto Trout Brook Drive. Go straight through the first three traffic lights (Boulevard, Memorial Road, and Farmington Avenue), then turn left at the next traffic light onto Fern Street. The Universalist Church is a short way down on the left hand side of the road. Turn into the driveway just before the church and park in the lot behind the church. Enter through side doors.
Directions to the Congregational Church: From I-84, take the "Park Road, West Hartford Center" exit. Turn left at the end of the long exit ramp, then turn right immediately at the light onto Raymond Road. Go to end, turn left onto Farmington Avenue. Turn left into parking lot behind the church. Enter through large doors.
Since we are using two locations for our concerts this fall, the location is marked next to each concert.

September 13, 2008: THE KENNEDYS (Congregational Church)Even after ten years, over a thousand gigs and 500,000 miles of touring as a married, music-making couple, singer-guitarists Pete and Maura Kennedy haven't killed each other. The duo savors each instant in life and in each other's company, and it shows in their music. The Kennedys have been charming audiences, record buyers and critics for the past decade with their exuberant mixture of folk, rock, country, pop and their own brand of secular gospel, a philosophical depth in their lyrics, and joyful, kinetic performances and recordings. $16, $14 members. |
September 20, 2008: BILL STAINES (Universalist Church)For over thirty five years, Bill has traveled back and forth across North America, singing his songs and delighting audiences at festivals, folksong societies, colleges, concerts, clubs and coffeehouses. A New England native, Bill has become one of the most popular singers on the folk music circuit today and averages around 200 concert dates a year. Bill weaves a magical blend of wit and gentle humor into his performances, and as one reviewer wrote, "he has a sense of timing to match the best stand-up comic." His music is a slice of Americana, reflecting with the same ease, his feelings about the prairie people of the Midwest or the adventurers of the Yukon. Interspersed between original songs, Bill also includes songs ranging from traditional folk tunes to more contemporary country ballads and delights in having the audience participate in many of the numbers. $16, $14 members. |

September 27, 2008: MODERN MAN (Universalist Church)A cross between Crosby, Stills & Nash and the Marx Brothers - David Buskin, Rob Carlson and George Wurzbach are three celebrated singers and songwriters, "terrific instrumentalists with gorgeous voices and hilarious wits." Together they are fast redefining something-or-other and delighting audiences as they interweave themes ranging from God to Godzilla, from manliness to cluelessness, from ESPN to the FBI with a vocal blend that has not been heard since Ella and F. Scott Fitzgerald went their separate ways. Over the last six years audiences up and down the East Coast and in such far-flung outposts of civilization as Ohio, Florida and Texas, have found them a delightful change of pace. As Showbusiness Weekly put it: "Buskin, Carlson and Wurzbach should be arrested for being so funny." Or as Back Stage put it, "...these guys are the Thomas Alva Edisons of humor. They're inventive. You know, the bulb goes on." Don't miss MODERN MAN, because like Christine Lavin said, "You'll love these guys; they are the cleverest band of the new millennium." $16, $14 members. |
(The Sounding Board will probably be closed on October 4, 2008, as neither church is available on this date.)
October 11, 2008: PAT WICTOR AND TOBY WALKER (Universalist Church)In a remarkably short period of time, Pat Wictor has become the name that is being chatted about on the acoustic, blues, folk and Americana circuits. Steeped in American "roots" music, Pat is a contemporary songwriter and interpreter drawing on the rural country, gospel, and blues traditions of our nation. Toby Walker is an unique, accomplished fingerstyle guitar virtuoso. Toby is adept at blues, rags, hot country picking, and coaxes more out of a guitar than anyone can imagine, but the originality doesn't end there. He is also a skilled singer and songwriter who draws inspiration from traditional and contemporary music. Toby takes that musical foundation and creates something uniquely his own and has been eagerly received in various venues including concert halls, festivals and coffeehouses throughout the U.S., England and Europe. |

October 18, 2008: ANGEL BAND (Universalist Church)Angel Band makes big noise - boisterous, sad, sweet, goofy, glorious and angelic. Any which way you look at it this stuff gets your attention. Whether it's the crazy tight three part harmony, the killer backup playing, the stories, the passion or the compassion, it gets your attention. The core of the band is held by the three singers: Nancy Josephson, Jen Schonwald and Kathleen Weber. All are experienced on lead and backup vocals. The love of the sound that three female voices make together is at the center of this group. The chord rules the day. Working as the crackerjack backup band (lovingly known as "Chum") are: David Bromberg (guitar, National Steel guitar, dobro), Bobby Tangrea (mandolin, guitar, fiddle), Bob Taylor (bass), Jeff Wisor (fiddle, mandolin). The difficult to pigeonhole sound that eminates from the band roams from old time "mountain" music to contemporary rock and roll influenced originals. Any way you slice it this band catches hold of you and won't let go. |
October 25, 2008: TRACY GRAMMER (Congregational Church)Tracy Grammer, who first became known as half of a duo with the late Dave Carter, now plays solo or with Jim Henry. She is an outstanding singer, songwriter, and musician. "Tracy Grammer is a brilliant artist and unique individual. Her voice is distinctive, as is her mastery over the instruments she plays." - Joan Baez. |

Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly present an enthralling concert of traditional American and Celtic American folk songs, a cappella pieces, hymns, dance tunes, and original works. Elwood and Aubrey blend unusual harmonies and play guitar, Appalachian mountain dulcimer, Irish tin whistle, harmonica, banjo, bones, spoons, limberjack, Australian monkey pods, toy xylophone, and other surprises. Their performance is appealing to all ages, and with humor, audience participation, and a highly relaxed stage presence, Aubrey and Elwood explain song origins to give more relevance to the material.
Woods Tea Company is a musical group that defies categorization. They perform bluegrass, Celtic tunes, sea chanties, and folk songs with an equal ease and skill. In concert, the group draws on a wide variety of musical experience and expression. They employ as many as a dozen different instruments from banjos, bouzoukis and bodhrans, guitars, ukelele and hammered dulcimer.
The Vermont based group tours the country offering a mixture of lively and dry New England humor. The award winning band has been featured at Lincoln Center, The Chautauqua Institute, National Public Radio and on over 150 public television stations throughout the U.S.A.

I am looking for concert posters and handbills of all genres of music from
1920 through 1969 for a book currently in production. Major concert venues,
Coffee House fliers, and Festival posters will all be included. As a
collector, I will also pay much higher than market prices for concert posters
of artists like Bob Dylan (up to $10,000 for some 60's posters with a photo of
him) and other Folk, Country, Blues, R&B, Rock and Roll (i.e. Buddy Holly,
Rolling Stones, Elvis, Beatles) and Jazz artists.
